Reveal: Primary Bedroom Refresh

After focusing much of our efforts (and money!) on the main level remodel, we weren’t quite ready to fully transform the other rooms yet. But, in all honesty, the primary bedroom was really depressing me. It was sad, drab, and uninviting. So, although I’d love to rip out those carpets and update the trim, I opted for a quick, easy bedroom refresh to make the space shine right now!

Bedroom Before:

Here’s the bedroom space when we purchased our home last spring. Yikes, I know. Ew. The dull beige walls, dated fixtures, and lifeless carpet weren’t doing this room any favors. Just like a few other rooms in this house, the bedroom layout is a bit awkward.

Here’s what we were working with when we moved in. I know. Ew.

It’s asymmetrical, with the main focus on the view outside, which is lovely, but the room’s function and flow left much to be desired. This presented some interesting design challenges that I was excited to tackle!

Wall Paint

I started off by painting the entire room Chantilly Lace, just like the rest of the house. I love this neutral white color. I absolutely love this bright, neutral white; it’s clean, modern, and works beautifully as a neutral backdrop. But even with the fresh coat of paint, the room still felt pretty sad. Although, to be fair, Pete looks pretty happy in the process photos.

Then, instead of a full accent wall, I painted half the wall a dark, rich black – Iron Ore. This is the same color I used in the Office Nook .This helped give the space some definition and also helped provide a a faux headboard (the search has been on for one to fit under this window).

Bedding

I also changed up our bedding. Cozy Earth gifted their bamboo bedding bundle which is the softest fabric I’ve ever felt! The bedding arrived in beautiful, reusable canvas bag for storing. It added so much texture and luxury to our bedroom refresh!

Later on, I updated our bed with a memory foam mattress , and it was a total game-changer. If you’ve been debating whether to upgrade your mattress—do it. The comfort level is next level, and it’s made a huge difference in how well we sleep.

Window Treatments

Our bedroom windows are a bit…weird. To address the asymmetry, I installed these Crossweave Curtains (my favorite curtains EVER!). Their lightweight texture adds softness to the harsh space, and I pull them slightly more to one side to create a balanced look, even when the window itself isn’t symmetrical.

Later, I layered my favorite woven wood shades (not seen here), which I use in almost every room for texture. They provide privacy plus a ton of texture and warmth.

Lighting

One of my favorite aspects of our bedroom refresh is this new pendant light from Hangout Lighting. Their website makes it easy to customize each part of the light. I added the brass base to add a bit of warmth.

Hangout Lighting generously gifted this pendant light for my bedroom project. It is such a wonderful light, I would definitely order from them for any other project!

Wall Shelf

To balance the asymmetrical wall, I added a small floating wall shelf. It’s perfect for displaying art, small plants, or decorative objects, and it makes it easy to switch things up whenever I feel like a change. For this wall shelf, I used a small 24″ long piece of wood and basic L brackets in black – a super easy and simple solution.

Bedroom Refresh Sources

Overall, I chose pieces that would give us the biggest bang for our buck and solved a design challenge. The oversized Moroccan rug helps cover the outdated carpet while adding a bold, graphic element. The tassel lumbar pillow introduces texture and breaks up the flatness of the bedding.

I chose woven wood shades for privacy and to soften the harsh window and add even more texture. Check out my guide on choosing Woven Wood Shades for more details. The bamboo nightstands introduce warmth and contrast beautifully against the dark wall and crisp white bedding. Together, these elements create a layered, cozy aesthetic that feels both intentional and inviting.

Final Thoughts

This room is far from perfect and still so much room for improvement, but I absolutely love our bedroom refresh. It now feels cozy and warm and is one of my favorite DIY home projects because it proves that you don’t need a massive budget or a complete renovation to make a space feel special.
